USPS sorting and delivery system ready for holiday mail in Kansas
Dec 11, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - New sorting and delivery technology is improving mailing efforts in Kansas, and Topeka is the hub for it all.
When the machine hits full stride, it's processing 5,000 packages every hour.
"Before, we did a manual sortation, and we would have about 300-400 packages per hour," said United States Postal Service (USPS) Communications Specialist Mark Inglett. "We get the packages worked that much sooner, the carriers get on the street to the customers that much sooner, and we get the mail to them that much sooner as well."

The USPS has already worked more than five billion holiday packages. Sorting and delivery centers like Topeka's ensure people get their packages on time and in the right place.
"Mostly just shipping for the holidays," said Topeka resident Larry Sisco. "Some presents for family members around the country. I try to get them out early so if they have a hiccup, it doesn't cause a problem."
While technology is crucial for a smooth operation, USPS says it's their dedicated employees who make the difference.
"Our employees are the heartbeat of the post office," Inglett said. "We couldn't do it without them, so we want to make sure they're appreciated. We've converted some part-timers into full-time positions, make sure they have a great career to work for and enjoy."

Right now, there are about 80 sorting and delivery centers across the country. USPS says they're hoping to ramp it up to 400 in the near future.
