Palmer rail stop site evaluation continues by MassDOT

PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) - The search for an ideal location of a Palmer Passenger Rail stop continues.
The Steaming Tender restaurant is one of six proposed stops on the Compass Rail line. It'll go west to Albany or east to Boston.
This restaurant, formerly known as the Palmer Union Station is expected to be discussed at a public meeting hosted by MassDOT this coming Monday. The restaurant owner Scarlet Lamothe, believes that this site is the perfect spot for a train station.
She says it'll provide easy transfer between the north-south and west-east rail lines…and create more ridership. "It's a huge economic benefit for housing transportation," says Lamothe. "For growth in the area and the walkability to places, When you have more people coming and going into the area, it's prosperous."
MassDOT's meeting on Monday will provide analysis of the 11 original potential station sites, the level 1 “fatal flaw” site analysis which brought the field down to 6 and the level 2 comparative evaluation of the remaining 6 sites. The level 2 comparative evaluation includes a scoring metric of the following for each site: impact on engineering and operations, mobility, environment and economic development.
In a statement to 22News, town manager of Palmer, Brad Brothers stated, "the town is excited to continue working with MassDOT and state officials to bring this service back to Palmer. Whether you will utilize the rail for work or pleasure, having a stop with easy in and out access is a wonderful value add to our rural community."
This meeting takes place between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM at the Palmer Public Library.
The next steps will include defining station amenities and narrowing the field down to one location for conceptual design.
