Springfield council rejects pay raise proposal
Dec 11, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Earlier this week-- the Springfield City Council rejected a proposal that would have raised pay for city officials. That will no longer happen.
This proposal would have raised pay for the mayor, city council, and school committee members annually. But it did not get passed.
The Council voted 6-5 in favor, but a 2/3rds majority would have been needed to advance the proposal The idea behind this proposal was to make the pay increases automatic instead of periodic raises but there would be a limit of a 2% increase each year.
There would have been an annual cost of living adjustment, determined by Springfield Retirement Board that would be set for 2026. City councilor Victor Davila explains to 22News what will happen moving forward, "We need to regroup and think about what we are going to do again. I have not spoken to the council again as of on this matter yet but we will be having a conversation."
He says their next conversation will help them figure out how to move forward regarding this proposal.
