Health experts warn of rising airborne viruses ahead of holidays

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — As the holiday season approaches, airborne viruses such as the flu and RSV are on the rise in Georgia.
Viruses thrive in colder months, and with increased holiday travel and gatherings, the spread of illnesses becomes more likely.
“It’s that time of year, as simple as that,” one health professional said.
While many focus on celebrations, it’s easy to overlook the invisible threat of germs. Traveling, visiting loved ones and spending time in crowded spaces can heighten exposure to illnesses.
“Every time people visit others, whether through airports or family gatherings, they have fun,” said Dr. John Rowlett, Chair of Pediatrics at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital. “But a week or two later, they often share not just stories but the viruses they’ve encountered.”
Doctors stress prevention as the best defense against airborne viruses. Staying up to date on vaccinations, including flu shots and COVID-19 boosters, is key.
For those traveling with young children or immunocompromised individuals, RSV vaccines are also recommended for eligible groups.
“If you want to have a good holiday season, make sure you’re up to date on your shots,” Rowlett said. “The RSV vaccine is for those over 65 and some high-risk groups, but influenza vaccines are for everyone, and COVID boosters are highly recommended for those at higher risk.”
Dr. Rowlett also emphasized simple precautions:
“If you’re sick, stay home. Wear a mask if you’re coughing in public. Cover your mouth, wash your hands—just like your grandmother taught you.”
By following these steps, families can enjoy the holidays while keeping loved ones safe.
