Xcel Energy plans to install firedetecting cameras in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Xcel Energy will soon use artificial intelligence to detect wildfires sooner and they hope to bring that technology to New Mexico. Last week, the electric utility announced plans to install an early fire detection camera system in 11 Texas counties. The AI in those cameras can spot smoke quickly when a fire starts. The system will then alert human analysts, determine its location, and notify a 911 call center.

Xcel has already deployed these cameras in Colorado and said they plan to have them in eastern New Mexico in the next five years. "And we are working with communities, first responders, and looking for the best locations to be able to locate these cameras," said Adrian Rodriguez, President of Xcel Energy New Mexico-Texas.
The news comes amid lawsuits against Xcel Energy over the Smokehouse Creek Fire which burned more than a million acres and killed two people in the Texas panhandle and Oklahoma earlier this year.
