Pet microchip scanning station opens in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island’s first microchip scanning station is now available at the Providence Animal Rescue League.
“The whole point of our microchip scanner is to empower the community and give them the tools they need to do it themselves without needing to bring that animal into a shelter,” Providence Animal Rescue League Intake and Cat Coordinator Hannah MacLellan said.
Any dog or cat that is microchipped has their owner’s information, including name and address, attached to them wherever they go.
Incase an animal does get lost, the chances of them being found are now greater with the help of the scanner station.
“Most shelters microchip all of their animals, so that’s dogs and cats. It just helps in the unfortunate situation where if they do get lost they are able to reunite so much quicker,” MacLellan said.
The shelter said the process is simple, does not take long, and is free to use.
The shelter added it hopes to spread this idea across the rest of the state with the goal of more lost pets being able to make their way back home.
The scanning station is open year-long, and for those who look to get their animal microchipped, the shelter offers clinics in the summer for $20.
