Christmas Lights map back for 5th year
Dec 11, 2024
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Sioux Falls area has been lit up this holiday season and one man has created a map to help others see the festive houses and neighborhoods.
For the last five years, Josh Hayes, and a few helpers, have made a Christmas Lights Map out of the best light displays around town. This year, 25 displays made the cut and half of them are new.
“I really enjoy doing this with my family and seeing how beautiful Sioux Falls is,” Hayes said. “We don't have to go to Minneapolis or Omaha to see some fantastic lights, they're all here within Sioux Falls.”
Over 21,000 people used the map last year, Hayes said, which is nearly doubled from the 9,300 people in 2022. Since this year’s map launched five days ago, they’ve already seen 1,500 people use it.
The map, which automatically uploads into a Google Maps route, takes about two hours to complete in full. Some displays span the entire neighborhood, interact with music or have a unique element to them like over 400 Christmas inflatables.
Hayes said he’s noticed more people stepping up their Christmas lights game as the map grew in popularity. There were 85 more submissions this year than last year.
One of the displays that’s continued to get more elaborate over the years is Lights on Lotta. The display has been featured on the Christmas Lights Map every year.
Lighting up the neighborhood to benefit kids
“We always decorated the house, but we just got bigger and bigger every year and then expanded to the neighbors and then it expanded across the street,” said Ryan Borns, who’s in charge of the display.
Borns and his husband, Scott Ihnen, have been decorating their neighborhood on Lotta Street for six years.

“It takes a long time. I'd say we have over 300 hours invested just this year,” Borns added. “I have no idea, I’m guessing I'd say we have over 50,000 lights.”
Along with the lights, Borns and Ihnen also raise money for Canines for Warriors and Big Paw Canines, two organizations that help pair service animals with veterans. They’ve raised over $50,000 since they started.
On Dec. 18, Lights on Lotta is hosting a Military and First Responders night where veterans will pass out candy canes and hot chocolate. Some of the dogs from Big Paws will also be there with their owners.
In the future, Hayes hopes to add more interactive elements to the map and collaborate with businesses on displays. He added that if there is a display in town that isn’t on the map, people should submit an application for next year.
