Police surround East Memphis home after pursuing suspect wanted in shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man wanted for allegedly breaking through a window of a Hickory Hill home and shooting a woman last month shot himself after police chased him to an East Memphis house.
Officers surrounded the scene on Echles Street near Elliston on Wednesday afternoon.
They say the suspect, who was spotted in the 900 block of Getwell around 1:30, was wanted for Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Domestic Assault in connection with a Nov. 24 shooting on Hickory Ridge Drive.
A police aviation unit was used to track him to Echles.
A TACT unit approached the vehicle and located the male suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers aided the man, who was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

According to a police report, the suspect was wanted after a woman was shot around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in the 1200 block of Hickory Ridge Drive.
The woman told police she was eating dinner with her two sons when she saw the victim break through her front window and get inside the residence. He fired four shots at her, striking her once in the thigh.

The victim said she ran out of the house and into the yard, where she fell in the grass. She told police the suspect pointed the gun at her head and attempted to fire, but the gun malfunctioned.
After racking the weapon several times, the suspect got away and police were not able to find him. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
