The City of Lexington is adding two traffic calming devices downtown on West High Street. Work began yesterday Wednesday and should be finished on the 20th. Doug Burton is the city’s director of engineering. “One of them is what we call a raised crossing, and the other is a speed table. And the difference is, is that we’re promoting pedestrians to cross at the raised crossing. It’ll be signalized as such, and that’ll be near Merino Street, whereas the speed table will be at Madison Place.” The devices will join two speed tables between Rupp Arena and its main parking lot installed early last summer. Jeff Neal, the city’s director of traffic engineering, said reducing vehicle speeds also makes the area safer for pedestrians. “That has been a benefit to just make sure people go slower through there, where you have a lot of pedestrians, we have had to come back and modify them a little bit, because we did have a number of drivers that were going around them on the right-hand side.” Work on the new raised crossing and speed table on West High Street will reduce traffic to one lane. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
