Cold air settles in for Thursday
Dec 11, 2024
We saw a quick reminder that we are heading into the winter season on Wednesday with a light blanket of snow falling during the early morning hours as colder air rushed into the region. Fortunately road temperatures remained above freezing so the impacts were minimal early. It was a chilly day with afternoon highs only in the mid to upper 30s as a secondary wave of energy approached from the west. This wave should produce some additional scattered snow showers (and possibly just plain rain showers…at least initially) into Wednesday evening with some heavier bursts possible. Those areas that see snow showers/squalls can expect roadways to potentially become slick through the evening and into early Thursday as temperatures drop well into the 20s so plan ahead for that.
It looks to be a quiet but very cold start to Thursday with temperatures in the upper teens and low 20s to start the day. In addition to the scattered slick spots potentially across the area, wind chills may be down into the low teens for a brief period of time. The remainder of the day will feature plenty of sunshine but it won’t do much to warm our temperatures up thanks to the cold air-mass in place. Afternoon highs should only recover into the mid to upper 30s so we’ll stay well below our average highs for this time in December.
The good news is that a quick warm-up is on the way for Friday and into the weekend. Quiet weather will hang around on Friday with a mix of clouds and sunshine as a southwest flow pushes more moderate air back into the commonwealth. Afternoon highs will surge back into upper 40s so it should be a nice finish to the week. Our rain chances ramp up this weekend as the next storm system rolls into the Ohio Valley Saturday. You’ll need the umbrella if you’re going to be out and about as occasional rain and damp conditions should be the rule. Temperatures will be milder into the low 50s so everything should fall in the liquid form. We may end up with some solid rainfall as widespread 1″ plus totals are on the table. The showers should linger into Sunday but be more scattered. Overall look for a dreary weekend across the Bluegrass.
Our active and unsettled weather pattern will continue into next week as another round of showers will be possible late Monday and into Tuesday. One positive is that temperatures should remain generally in the 50s for afternoon highs so there isn’t really any concern for winter weather in the equation although afternoon highs may back off closer to average into the mid to upper 40s by the middle part of next week. The bottom line is you’ll need to keep the rain gear close by in the coming days.
