Special judge and clerk appointed to Letcher County case against former sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Chief Justice of the Commonwealth Laurance B. VanMeter has announced the appointments of a special judge and circuit court clerk to oversee the case of Commonwealth of Kentucky v. Shawn Stines in Letcher Circuit Court.
The special judge for the case is Circuit Court Judge Christopher T. Cohron, whose regular jurisdiction covers Edmonson and Warren counties in the 8th Judicial Circuit, Division 1. Judge Cohron will preside over the case until its conclusion.
Additionally, Cortney Shewmaker, the circuit court clerk for Boyle County in the 47th Judicial Circuit, has been appointed as the special clerk for the case.
Shawn “Mickey” Stines, the former Letcher County sheriff, faces charges of murder of a public official in connection with the fatal shooting of Letcher District Court Judge Kevin Mullins in September 2024.
