KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One man is in custody after a more than two-hour-long standoff at the Westport Shopping Center in Kansas City.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, just after 10:30 Wednesday morning, officers were called to 43rd Street and Westport Road on reports of an armed man making threats to a rideshare driver. A rideshare had been ordered for a male passenger, and when the driver picked the man up, he quickly started making threatening comments.
Police also said the passenger told the driver he had a gun, and that led the driver to pull over at the Westport Shopping Center, get out of the car, and call 911.
When officers arrived, they saw a man in the car refusing to get out. A standoff then began due to the nature of his threats. People at the shopping center were asked to shelter in place during the incident.
Around 1 p.m., after more than two hours of negotiations, the man was taken into custody.
