Bartholomew County man given life in prison without parole in killing of 'onagain, offagain' girlfriend

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Bartholomew County man who shot and killed his girlfriend will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
In October, a jury found Anthony Carter, 51, guilty of murdering 40-year-old Ashley E. Neville on April 16, 2023. The jury recommended Carter serve a lifetime sentence behind bars. On Wednesday, a judge made it official and handed down the term of life in prison without parole.
"This case is a gruesome reminder of the evil that some people are capable of," said Bartholomew County Prosecutor Lindsey Holden-Kay.

Previous stories detail the murder of Ashley Neville. Carter confessed to shooting and asphyxiating his "on-again, off-again" girlfriend. Police said he also attempted to conceal her body in the bedroom of a home on East 650 South.
Carter was taken into custody after being spotted in the woods outside the home by investigators. A gun used in the murder was also found in the woods.
An autopsy revealed that Neville died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Court records reveal that a no contact order had been placed against Carter by Neville prior to her death.
