GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Guilford College will spend a second year on probation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, according to a statement from a representative at Guilford College. After monitoring the college for two years following its 2020 financial crisis, the SACSCOC put the college on probation for "failing to demonstrate compliance with the Principles of Accreditation" in December 2023. The college has remained accredited throughout probation. Probation is the most serious public sanction imposed by the SACSCOC Board of Trustees short of loss of accreditation. The college had reportedly failed to comply with Standard 13.3 of the Principles of Accreditation, which states that "the institution has sound financial resources and a demonstrated, stable financial base to support the mission of the institution and the scope of its programs and services. The SACSCOC decided to extend the college's probation for "good cause" during a Sunday board meeting. "Good cause" means the college has shown "significant recent accomplishments" in addressing noncompliance, provides evidence that shows that it will fix all deficiencies within 12 months and assures the board that there are no other reasons why it cannot be continued, according to a disclosure from SACSCOC. "SACSCOC granted Guilford [College] 12 additional months, which was noted as a possibility last December. We understand about 80 percent of schools on probation get the full 24 months to ensure compliance," said Ty Buckner, vice president of marketing and communications at Guilford College.
