Dec 11, 2024
ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- Police and school officials are investigating Wednesday after finding a student with a handgun at Perry Hill Elementary School, according to Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS).
NACS Superintendent Wayne Barker issued a notice to families regarding what he described as a "serious incident." In a second message, Barker said the district does not believe the student intended to hurt anyone. However, he also acknowledged the "seriousness of the offense" and said the district plans to seek justice to the fullest extent of the law.
As of Wednesday, the student has been suspended from school "pending expulsion."
The incident started at 1:40 p.m. when a student found a bullet on the playground and reported it to a staff a member. The staff member noticed another student "acting suspicious" and eventually contacted a school resource officer.
The Allen County Sheriff's Department told WANE 15 that officers were present when staff found the gun in the student's backpack. The Department of Child Services also helped with the investigation.
According to NACS, all students and staff are safe. The school district informed families of the situation at 2:39 p.m., and the investigation concluded at 4:45 p.m.
There is no ongoing threat at Perry Hill Elementary School, but Barker said there will be an increased police presence at the school Thursday. Staff members will also provide "age-appropriate" lessons within singular classes.
