WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The U.S. House of Representatives crossed off a major item on its to-do list Wednesday: passing the annual defense bill. After months of negotiations, lawmakers landed on a compromise $895 billion package. "There's a lot of positive things in the National Defense Authorization Act that were negotiated in a bipartisan way," said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). One of the main bipartisan agreements is a 14.5% pay raise for junior service members and a 4.5% increase for others. "No military family should have to rely on food stamps to feed their children," said U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.). Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez of New Mexico, oppose a last-minute add by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) that would block gender-affirming care for children of military families. "I don't know why Republicans keep launching culture wars when the NDAA should focus on preventing wars," Leger Fernandez said. Some Republicans said this provision does not have to be in the package since President-elect Donald Trump plans to ban gender-affirming care across the board anyway. But other GOP members, like U.S. Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.), support the effort and said Democrats are just using this as an excuse to vote against the overall package. "We're talking about children under the age of 18," Scott said. "And we are saying that we are not going to allow a surgical procedural on them that could lead or result in sterilization." Democrats though celebrated the removal of other controversial GOP measures from the bill, including those related to abortion rights and diversity, equity and inclusion polices. "And that's a victory," Jeffries said.  The Senate is expected to take up the legislation next week. It would then head to President Joe Biden's desk.
