Man arrested for assault on South Carolina congresswoman

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - A man is facing a federal charge after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) says he assaulted her because of her views on transgender people but witnesses dispute her story.
On Tuesday Mace posted on X, "I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-tr*ns man."
The congresswoman's team says the assault happened during an altercation over trans rights. They thanked the U.S. Capitol Police for responding quickly.
Police say they arrested 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois. He now faces a charge of assaulting a government official.
Mace has drawn controversy in recent weeks over legislation she introduced to ban transgender women from using bathrooms on Capitol Hill.
Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries responded to her allegation of assault.
"The reports at least of the alleged assault and attack on Nancy Mace are very troubling," Jeffries said. "No member of Congress should be accosted or assaulted or attacked on their political beliefs."
Witnesses are disputing Mace's story. Some told the news outlet 'The Imprint' that they saw the incident unfold and it wasn't an assault at all.
Policy advocate Elliot Hinkle told the publication that McIntyre introduced himself to Mace, shook her hand, and talked to her about trans youth. 'The Imprint' reports that Hinkle said "From what I saw it was a normal handshake and interaction."
In a statement to Nexstar, Congresswoman Mace's office responded to the dispute over her story.
"With an ongoing investigation, we are limited in what we can share (...) However, this incident underscores the alarming lengths to which the Left will go to silence women who dare to stand up against the trans takeover."
Congresswoman Mace also says President-elect Donald Trump called her to check in after the incident.
