Democrats ask Biden to strengthen immigrant protections

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- A group of Democrats in Congress is calling on President Joe Biden to extend protections for some immigrant groups amid concerns about mass deportations under President-elect Donald Trump.
Jose Cabrera has lived in the U.S. for more than thirty years.
"Jose has been part of his community for a long time. He's a landscaper," Cabrera's translator said during a press conference Wednesday.
He's a temporary protected status holder from El Salvador, and someone Democratic lawmakers say could be at risk of deportation under President-elect Trump.
"They will do everything they can to roll back protections, and they plan to deport millions of long-term immigrants," Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said.
Sen. Padilla and his Congressional Hispanic Caucus Colleagues in the Senate are urging the president to extend protections for TPS holders from Ecuador, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) says it should be simple.
"The president has the legal authority to act to give these long-term immigrant communities certainty. And he should use it."
Senators are also asking the president to speed up the process for DACA recipients to renew their status.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy gives undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children temporary relief from deportation.
"For dreamers, the United States is their home," Cortez Masto said.
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas.) says illegal immigration has gotten out of control.
"We've seen 12 million people come into this country illegally under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris," Sen. Cruz said.
During a hearing about mass deportations this week, North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis says people voted for President-elect Trump because of this issue.
"American people elected a new president, in large part to secure the border and deport people who came illegally under their predecessor," Tillis said.
