WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - Secretary of State Antony Blinken faced tough questions from a Republican-led House of Representatives committee on Wednesday about the August 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Blinken told lawmakers he stands by the administration's decision. After a year of trying, a House committee got its chance to question Blinken about the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal. "You left behind weapons to the Taliban, classified documents to them,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas.). As the U.S. left Afghanistan three years ago, a bombing at the airport killed 13 service members. Democrats criticized Republicans for even holding the hearing. "On this committee, the Republicans have blown a lot of smoke about the process,” said Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.). Blinken defended the administration's decision.  He blamed the chaos on a deal that former president Donald Trump reached with the Taliban in 2020. "Had he not followed through on his predecessors’ commitments, attacks would have escalated,” said Blinken. Ohio Republican Congressman Warren Davidson pushed back on blaming Trump. "To try to blame this on Donald Trump we all know there is no way anyone forced you guys to do the dumbest thing possible,” said Davidson. New York Congressman Gregory Meeks believes President Joe Biden made the right choice. "And not ask another generation of Americans to make the ultimate sacrifice for a war that no longer has a purpose,” said Meeks. Members of the Trump team working on the transition are considering creating a commission to investigate the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.
