Dec 11, 2024
Baltimore County has launched an interactive map to help residents visualize health, socioeconomic, environmental, and educational data. The Social Determinants of Health web tool is part of Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski’s ongoing efforts to prioritize a healthy county while making data accessible and making government more transparent. Other efforts have included launching BCSTAT, Baltimore County’s first data-driven performance management program that aims to improve performance, ensure data quality, enhance transparency and increase accountability across government; the Baltimore County Open Budget platform that allows residents to explore the budget online; the dashboard detailing food establishment closures, and more.“We are proud to continue our work to make Baltimore County more data driven and accessible, and this tool will help us partner directly with community members to be more accurate and deliberate in the services we provide,” Olszewski said. “It is critical that we meet our residents where they are to improve access to resources and quality of life in all of our neighborhoods.”The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) web application was developed by the Baltimore County’s BCSTAT team. The tool will help County departments, residents, and community partners understand where communities lack basic needs and where interventions might be helpful. SDOH refer to factors that influence health and quality-of-life risks and outcomes. These metrics are divided into five categories displayed by census tract:Neighborhood
Health
Education
Social & Community
EconomyUsers of the tool can look up any address in Baltimore County to find in which tract that address is located, showing the user how well that neighborhood fares. BCSTAT is continuing to expand the list of metrics that will be available in the tool’s data library. To learn how to use the tool, a training video for new users is available on Baltimore County’s YouTube page.
