Newsom sets special election dates for vacant 32nd District Assembly seat
Dec 11, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a special election date for the currently vacant 32nd District Assembly seat.
Newsom and the California Secretary of State set two election dates for 2025 to fill the seat left vacant by Rep. Vince Fong after he was elected by voters in November to represent the 32nd Assembly district despite him stating he only sought reelection to his 20th Congressional district seat in the House of Representatives.
Vince Fong elected to full term as 20th District representative in the House
The special primary election will be held on Feb. 25 and the general election between the top two primary finishers will take place on April 29, according to the California Secretary of State's Office.
Fong defeated Bakersfield City Councilmember Ken Weir in the Nov. 5 election despite Fong stating he was only running for Congress. Fong endorsed Weir in the race.
Newly-elected lawmakers were sworn in on Dec. 2 for the start of a new legislative session.
Shortly after the announcement, businessman Stan Ellis announced his candidacy for the seat. Ellis previously unsuccessfully ran for the 20th Congressional district in 2024.
The 32nd Assembly district includes portions of Kern and Tulare counties.
