ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Soon it will be the new year, which means new year's resolutions — and a very common one is weight loss. People on social media are once again bringing back the hype surrounding weight loss drugs like Ozempic, so News 8's Oran Spitzer spoke with a local doctor to find out if these drugs are a good solution. Spoiler alert — injectible weight loss drugs may not be the right solution for everyone. That being said, if you are already on them, make sure to follow your doctor's instructions. "The general advice is, don't stop to take the medication on a whim," said Dr. Dilendra Weerasinghe, the director of bariatric surgery with RRH. "Just don't stop them because you want to have a nice Christmas party." Weerasinghe says that patients who already know how the drug works for them tend to get inventive around the holidays, by stopping to take them so they can indulge. The holiday season often includes holiday meals and alcohol, but drinking and these drugs don't mix well, and users may find themselves feeling nauseous. He says with New Year's resolutions, patients tend to come in during January, February, and March — and if that's your plan — Weerasinghe says it's counter-productive to over-indulge during the holiday season. "What it does is it improves the body's ability to handle sugar," he says about these injectable weight loss drugs. "So, if you're putting the wrong fuel all the time it's not going to help you in any which way. So, your results will be poor if you continue to put the wrong fuel in your system." Weeresinghe says injectable weight loss drugs come with a list of side effects including, gastric issues which can be permanent, nausea, vomiting, loss of muscle mass, and more. So, be sure to consult a healthcare professional. He adds that obesity is not a choice but there are contributing factors like consuming processed foods or not working out. So, keep that in mind.
