WAVY 10 is On Your Side, reminding drivers of tips for how to stay safe on windy, wet roads.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), drivers should avoid cruise control while navigating in the rain, as there is an increased chance of losing control of the vehicle. They also advise drivers to drive slowly and to leave more room between themselves and the drivers in front.
AAA also asks drivers to avoid hydroplaning by driving in the tracks of the vehicle in front of you, and by taking your foot off the accelerator while approaching puddles.
However, if your car does begin to skid, AAA said to not panic. They tell drivers to look and steer in the direction the car is going until you regain control of the vehicle and to avoid slamming the breaks.
While visibility is low, AAA urges drivers to avoid driving with your hazards on, as that can confuse other motorists around you.
And, as always, never drive through standing water — hidden hazards in the water could damage your vehicle.
