HONOLULU (KHON2) -- For many on Maui, 2023 was a devastating year and that's certainly the case for this laulima family. For one mother, tragedy struck again this year. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Mom and Dad had four children and lived in their home in Lahaina. Dad died in an accident 23 years ago, when their oldest was 19. Mom took a job running a bed and breakfast, so when the fire swept through last year, it took their home and the B&B, therefore her livelihood. Mom found a place in Kihei but in October of last year, a car pulled in front of her and caused an accident that damaged her car and compounded the toll. One month later, her oldest son was diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer. She stayed by his side in San Diego and seven months later, in May of this year, he passed away just before his 42nd birthday. Mom is back on Maui now but is struggling financially as she hadn't worked for that time. She goes back and forth between staying with her other children. When laulima asked what she needed, she said she didn't even know what to ask for. So, we will say for her, gift cards would be most helpful - to Target, Walmart, Amazon, Longs Drugs and grocery stores like Foodland, Safeway and Times.
