Missing Green Lake kayaker who faked death returned home on his own accord, awaits initial court appearance

GREEN LAKE, Wis. (WFRV) - The Green Lake County Sheriff's Office held a press conference on Wednesday morning to speak on the Ryan Borgwardt case, saying he came home on his own accord and awaits an initial court appearance.
Months after his disappearance, allegedly faking his own death and reportedly fleeing the country, deputies say that Ryan Borgwardt came back to the United States and was taken into custody on December 10.

During a press conference on December 11, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll reiterated how proud he was of everyone who worked the case in their efforts to bring Borgwardt home.

"In one of my press conferences, I said we hope to bring him home in time for Christmas," began an emotional Sheriff Podoll. "I couldn't be more proud of [everyone] for what they did for a family. We didn't give up and we can stand here today feeling relieved."
Deputies did not say where Borgwardt was but did say that he came back via an airplane on his own accord. "He came back willingly and came back for his family," Sheriff Podoll stated.

It was stated that Borgwardt notified authorities that he was coming home beforehand. The Sheriff also added that he spoke to the family, saying "I can only imagine how they feel."
Sheriff Podoll ended the press conference on an emotional note, "We brought a dad back on his own accord. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas."
It is possible that Borgwardt will make his initial court appearance today, Wednesday, December 11.
