WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — This week's cold front may have you reaching for your space heater, but those handy heaters can be a fast track to fires. To show just how destructive space heaters can be in a short amount of time, the Wichita Falls Fire Department hosted a demonstration in which a nearby newspaper fell atop the heater. Whether it's a newspaper or not, any nearby items can quickly cause destruction, even with modern safety features, according to Deputy Fire Marshal Chance Culley. "That heater we used today had an anti-tip, and it also had a thermostat," Culley said. "We set it up to where, you know, a newspaper happened to fall over the heater, and it showed how quickly a fire can start." "We don't keep combustibles anywhere near them," Culley added. "We want to make sure that we're not running a bunch of extension cords to power it, and when you leave the room, turn it off." It's not all bad for space heater lovers, though. Culley added that as long as you're responsible and avoid plugging them into extension cords, space heaters can be useful tools during the colder months.
