GASTONIA, NC – A man will spend the rest of his life in prison for a deadly shooting that happened in Gastonia.
A jury convicted 31-year-old Marshawn Sanders of Shelby on Tuesday for the murder of 30-year-old Eric Glenn. The jury also convicted him on several other charges, including attempted first-degree murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle, and possession of firearm by felon.
Sanders shot Glenn on June 9, 2020 in the parking lot of the Ingco Express on Lowell Bethesda Road.
Prosecutors say Sanders was previously in a toxic romantic relationship with Brittany McGraw that ended a few months prior to the deadly shooting. In the weeks that followed their break-up, Sanders repeatedly threatened and harassed McGraw over text messages, and is believed to have busted out the windows of McGraw’s sister’s home. They say on June 9, 2020, Sanders and his girlfriend Ashley Abernathy followed McGraw’s car to the Ingco Express and opened fire on it in the parking lot.
McGraw, her two-year-old son and Glenn were all inside the car. A bullet came within inches of the child’s head before hitting the door frame. Another bullet hit Glenn in the chest killing him. Investigators say they found 12 shell casings in the parking lot. One round also hit a man’s work van parked in the parking lot.
A judge handed down a life sentence without parole for Sanders on the murder charge. The judge imposed additional sentences of 180-228 months, 180-228 months, 29-
47 months, 29-47 months, and 14-26 months for the attempted murder and weapons charges. All but one of those prison terms will be served consecutively to the life sentence.
