Bird flu killing wild birds in Louisiana, state wildlife agency says
Dec 11, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Wild reports wild birds in the state are dying due to highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, or more commonly known as bird flu.
The agency said bird fall migrations this year "have created a resurgence of HPAI-induced waterfowl disease in Louisiana." Wildlife officials said vultures, geese, scavenging raptors and other waterfowl are susceptible to the disease.
"Many wild birds recover from infection and develop immunity to a particular strain of AI, but others may exhibit neurological symptoms, which ultimately lead to the death of the bird," according to LDWF.
Agents said humans should not touch sick birds or have them around other birds. Pets should also be kept away from the sick birds.

"Mammals are, for the most part, resistant to H5N1 HPAI but rare fatal infections have been documented in dogs, cats, foxes, black bears and even dolphins," the agency said. There have been no reported infections in dogs in Louisiana.
According to officials, if clothing, objects, or healthy birds possibly come in contact with the disease, they should be washed and kept away from other birds, especially chickens.
