Bicyclist dies after being hit by car: CHP

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A bicyclist is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Oildale Tuesday night, according to CHP.
Around 7:30 p.m. a bicyclist was struck while riding in an area that is not very well lit on Airport Drive, south of Washington Avenue.
"A witness had reported that the pedestrian was crossing the roadway and possibly fell down in the roadway, and as he was getting up a Honda sedan traveling northbound in the number two lane at Airport at approximately 40 miles per hour unfortunately struck the pedestrian," CHP Sgt. Curtis Rhoades said.
Volunteer bell ringers needed to support the Salvation Army
The bicyclist suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with CHP's investigation.
According to officials, the victim's family showed up a short time later and confirmed the bicyclist's identity. However, the bicyclist's name has not been released by coroner's officials.
CHP are still investigating if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
