Union President calls for strike against the City of Fresno
Dec 10, 2024
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The City of Fresno Professional Employee Association (CFPEA) voted Monday to strike after labor negotiations went south.
The City of Fresno presented its last, best and final offer back in October of this year, but Union President Jesse Gonzalez said their offer was not enough, after 14 rounds of negotiations.
“What's very important for us is some key objectives or key points for us is that across the board, the 3%, seniority is part of the contract, on call, and one that I didn't mention yet was guaranteed one day off a week,” CFPEA President Jesse Gonzalez said.
In a press release, the City of Fresno outlined its last, best and final offer, including a 2% ongoing salary increase retroactive to June 17, 2024, and a 1% one-time payment based on annual base salary.
The City of Fresno responded to the call for a strike.
“The City has made significant efforts to address CFPEA’s concerns with proposals that are fair, competitive, and fiscally responsible. While we are disappointed by today’s outcome, our priority remains serving the residents of Fresno and ensuring continuity of operations.”

However, Gonzalez said the city already owes its members money. Gonzalez said the city conducted a study six years ago to determine what jobs needed pay increases.
“I have people who were with the city at the time. They've since retired and they will never see a penny of that cost and comp study because it was never fulfilled,” he said.
Leading to a strike that would be felt across Fresno.
“It's airports. It's solid waste. Garbage pickup up transportation in. So street maintenance. So there as well as for the professionals. So the average citizen may see some interruptions. It just depends on how the city has planned to deal with it,” Gonzalez said.
A date for a strike is yet to be determined.
