CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - With all this wet weather, it's important to know how to drive safely to protect yourself and others on the road. WEATHER ALERT: Heavy rain on Wednesday that could cause localized flooding Driving in heavy rain like this can be dangerous, so it's important to drive with caution and be extra patient. AAA says to remember to slow down and avoid hard braking. Large puddles can cause hydroplaning, and even damage a car's electrical system. If you hydroplane, ease off the accelerator, avoid hard braking, and continue driving steadily in the direction you want to go. Since it's harder to control your vehicle on slick roads, leave twice as much space between you and the vehicle in front of you, and be extra alert at stop signs and red lights. Before you head out Wednesday morning, check your tires to make sure they are properly inflated and check that your windshield wipers are in good condition. Finally, if your vehicle breaks down, do not lift the hood while the rain continues, as wet electrical systems can make it harder to start the engine.
