Travel forecast: AAA expects record numbers for 2024 holiday season
Dec 11, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS – If you’re traveling for Christmas or New Year's, you won’t be alone.
AAA projects record-setting holiday travel from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, with 119.3 million people nationwide expected to travel at least 50 miles. About 2.8 million Hoosiers will be among them.

“This year will be another record-setting year for travelers, and we are expecting to surpass the previous record that was set in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Christina Griffiths with AAA Hoosier Motor Club. “This year, Christmas falls on a Wednesday, which could contribute to the increase of travelers. More people can travel either the weekend before or after the holiday.”
About 90% of those travelers will drive, Griffiths said, including 2.57 million Hoosiers. Gas prices are lower than last year and are expected to remain that way through the start of January.
AAA said demand for gas typically drops in December, when more people work remotely, and shoppers opt for online purchases instead of in-store visits.
Sunday, Dec. 22, is projected as the busiest day on the roads, with peak travel coming during the afternoon and early evening hours.

While drivers welcome the news of low gas prices, air travelers will feel the pinch. AAA said domestic flight prices are up 4% compared to last year, with hotels (1% increase) and rental cars (8% increase) costing more. International travel will see a 7% bump.
