FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Eight people safely got out of a home on Vesey Ave. after a fire early Wednesday morning.
It started shortly after 1 a.m. at a house in the 3200 block of Vesey, near the intersection of Bluffton Rd. and Broadway. When fire crews arrived, a large amount of smoke was coming from the home. Firefighters found a small fire in the basement. It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control.
Eight people were inside the home when the fire started - seven adults and one child. They and some pets all got out safely.
The house has moderate fire, water, and smoke damage. Fire officials say the fire could have been larger if not for a broken water line, which helped extinguish the flames. Residents also said they used a fire extinguisher before fire crews arrived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, fire officials say it was possibly started by a space heater sitting too close to combustible items.
