ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A woman who's been working to collect 10,000 pairs of shoes for a nonprofit called "Soles 4 Souls" has officially met her goal. The global nonprofit aims to turn shoes and clothes into "opportunities" for those in need.
Ruby Black of Rochester, the ambassador for "Soles 4 Souls," collected old pairs of shoes people were looking to get rid of. She said they help in a few different ways - like keeping the shoes out of landfills and passing them on to someone who might need them instead. Or, she said they recycle the shoes and use the material for something else.
On Tuesday she and a few other volunteers loaded the shoes onto a truck to send off to entrepreneurs in low-income countries.

"It has been a lot of social media, it has been a lot of great supporters - from my friends, family, businesses that have had shoe boxes around the Rochester area, and - my husband who has allowed me to fill up my garage and this storage unit," Black said. "So, every bag represents 25 pairs of shoes. So, I've gone through and counted every single one individually, so it's been a little bit of a mission."

She said the next steps will be unloading the shoes in Alabama where they will be sorted and distributed.
