Dec 04, 2024
NEW YORK CITY (WWLP) - The 92nd annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is happening on Wednesday.
Tips for preventing Christmas tree fires in your home
The tree is from West Stockbridge, a 74-foot-tall Norway Spruce, and is the first tree to come from Massachusetts since 1959. Over 50,000 lights are now wrapped around the tree and are connected to about five miles worth of wire. The tree will remain in Manhattan until mid-January.
Several artists will be performing at the lighting on Wednesday, including Kelly Clarkson and The Backstreet Boys.
You can watch the tree lighting on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. right here on 22News.
Massachusetts Rockefeller Christmas Tree
The selection process for the 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree began in July 2020 when Rockefeller Center’s head gardener, Erik Pauze, first spotted the tree while searching for future New York City Christmas trees. He has always looked for a Norway Spruce because of its grand scale and strong branches.
When he thought he found what he was looking for, he knocked on the property’s door and met Earl Albert. Without hesitation, the Albert family agreed to donate their tree to become a holiday season icon.
Earl donated the tree to honor his late wife, Leslie, who died days before Pauze’s visit. NBC states that they both planted the tree in their yard in 1967 as newlyweds.
