LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! We have another shot of cold air on the way, this one a little colder than the last few to move through the area over the last week. Today will be windy out ahead of the cold front that will move through tonight. Wind gusts in excess of 40 mph will be possible this afternoon and into the evening hours. There will also be a round of gusty showers that will move through the eastern and southern Kentucky mid-to-late afternoon. This won’t amount to much but is ahead of the main cold front that sweeps through overnight. By around 10 p.m. to midnight, the main surface cold front will be moving through out of the northwest. This will bring us a quick round of breezy rain showers that will quickly turn to snow showers as temperatures drop. Many areas could be in the mid-to-upper 30s ahead of the front, and will fall into the 20s and teens as the cold front passes. Don’t expect much snow accumulation outside of a coating in spots. But you will need to remain alert for icy spots the on the roadways, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Any of the moisture left from the rain and snow showers will freeze with temperatures dropping into the teens for many. Bitter cold wind chills are expected when you head out the door on Thursday. Thanks to a lingering northwesterly wind, wind chills will be in the single digits, possibly close to zero in spots. That is very cold for this time of the year! Make sure you are bundled up and limit your time outside on Thursday especially early in the day. Cold temperatures will last through the daytime on Thursday. Afternoon highs are expected to only reach the low-to-mid 20s for most of the area. Wind chill values will remain in the low teens as the breezy and cold conditions continue. Friday morning start off with temperatures in the teens for most of the area, before climbing into the low 30s by the afternoon. Another cold night is expected Friday night ahead of a gradual warming through the weekend. Afternoon highs on Sunday will be back pushing the upper 40s, near 50. This will be ahead of rain chance Monday into Tuesday. Some heavy rain could be possible during this time as well. Temperatures will likely stay in the 50s for both Monday and Tuesday of next week as well.
