AUSTIN (KXAN) — The class of college football in the past few years has without question been the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs rarely come in to a game as an underdog. On Oct. 19, Georgia coach Kirby Smart's group made the trip to Austin to face the No. 1 team in the country. Steve Sarkisian's Texas Longhorns entered the game as the favorite and unbeaten. They left with a loss. Georgia dominated Texas, who struggled to get any sort of momentum rolling. Since that tough October evening, the Longhorns have not lost. "I thought we had good leadership," said Sarkisian about his team before the Georgia game. "I found out we do have good leadership. Those guys haven't wavered. They haven't blinked." Texas has won out after a loss early in conference play to reach the conference championship game for the second season in a row. In 2023, it was the Big 12. Now in their first year in the SEC, the Longhorns are set for a clash in Atlanta with a conference title at stake. Their opponent is again Georgia. The Longhorns players too feel the heightened sense of leadership from some veterans. "Just the urgency level on how we do things," Longhorns senior defensive back Jahdae Barron said about what's changed since the loss. "If your urgency level is high for wanting success, you don't tolerate certain things. And you have a different approach to certain things." "Just trying to be more vocal and be more positive," Longhorns sophomore linebacker Anthony Hill said. "You always try to stay positive in tough games and in whatever is going on. I feel like that kind of helped the team." Teams often harp on the importance of being able to handle adversity. Texas didn't have a lot until the Bulldogs came to town. "It was smooth sailing there for a while," said Sarkisian. "When you get hit in the mouth and you stumble and you fall, we had to get back up. We had to get back up quickly and we had to go compete again. And I thought this team did that. I was really proud of them for that." Being able to handle road environments also has been a key for Texas this year as they've won at places like Texas A&M, Michigan and Arkansas. Saturday won't be a direct road game but there's expected to be many more Georgia fans with the game in their home state. Texas Gameday is the official pregame show of Texas football and airs at 2 p.m. on KBVO. Jonathan Thomas hosts alongside Longhorn legends Dan Neil and Alex Okafor.
