Crews from both the Lancaster FD and Pleasant Township Fire Department responded to the home at 6:40 a.m., as did the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office and State Marshal deputies to investigate the scene, which remains under investigation.
A Fairfield County deputy, who was first to arrive at the scene, sustained minor injuries while attempting to get inside the home. Pleasant Township Fire Chief Mike Hutton said the deputy was unable to get into the home due to the extreme heat.
Firefighters who arrived a short time later were able to pull the woman out, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, though it is believed to have started in the kitchen area. No other injuries were reported.
