Safety Kaevon Merriweather was poached off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they have signed safety Kaevon Merriweather off of the Detroit Lions practice squad and onto their 53-man roster.
Merriweather, a Detroit-area native and Belleville High School alumnus, joined the Lions practice squad just a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, the second-year defensive back never was elevated to suit up for his hometown team on game day.
His signing with the Buccaneers will be a reunion, as they are the team he initially joined as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2023. He made their active roster out of training camp and ended up starting two games for Tampa Bay that season. Merriweather appeared in 25 games total for them before being cut just two days prior to when he signed with Detroit. Over that span, he recorded 24 total tackles and one pass breakup.
With Merriweather gone, Detroit is left with one open spot on their practice squad. Here is how that group stands at the moment:
DB Jamal Adams
EDGE Mitchell Agude
WR Maurice Alexander
LB Abraham Beauplan
OL Kingsley Eguakun
QB Jake Fromm
RB Jermar Jefferson
OL Jamarco Jones
WR Tom Kennedy
TE James Mitchell
DB Morice Norris
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
DL Chris Smith
EDGE Isaiah Thomas
EDGE Isaac Ukwu
In other news around the NFL, former Lions wide receiver Josh Reynolds was waived by the Broncos on Tuesday. Hmmm....
