WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A $12 million addition is coming to a community health center at Central and Grove in Wichita. The Community Wellness Center, which will be built on the Hunter Health campus, will give patients access to adult education and employment opportunities. The organization says access is key to improving health outcomes. This build will cost around $12 million. About $7 million has already been secured; however, Hunter Health is working on raising enough funds to apply for a grant that will help them fund the rest of the build. The grant from the Mabee Foundation requires Hunter Health to raise another $5 million. The foundation would then pitch in $750,000, helping Hunter Health obtain the rest of its funding needs for the new building. "We've already raised a significant portion of funding, and then we have additional resources for the balance," said Feimer. Staff with Hunter Health say that, according to the National Academy of Medicine, 80% of health outcomes are due to conditions in the places where they live, learn, and work. They say that by partnering with Goodwill to have an adult education program right next to their clinic, they can target those factors with access to education, employment, and health insurance. Wichita's new winter shelter now open "Whether you have insurance or no insurance, all of our fees are on a sliding fee scale based on income," said the CEO of Hunter Health, Amy Feimer. Nearly 47% of the patients who come to Hunter Health have no insurance. "We know our patients have more needs than we can take care of ourselves," said Feimer. "We also know that we are in a critical area of the community on this corner of Central and Grove." That's where Goodwill comes in. "Goodwill currently operates four different centers for educational opportunities. We'll actually be shifting one of our centers to this location," said the CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kansas, Laura Ritterbush. The old Hunter Health building will be knocked down, and a new two-story building will replace it. Goodwill will provide GED and English as a second language program through its Nexstep Alliance Program there. "Access to education and workforce development is a noted need within our patient population," said Feimer. "When you think about people having access to quality healthcare … having a job and access to benefits supports that effort along with having enough income to afford healthy eating," said Ritterbush. Hunter Health gets grant for big plans, but needs help They hope the location near the clinic will help clients get to the education programs easily. "Easy access is really important due to transportation being an issue. Our transportation center can take a while to get someone somewhere," said Ritterbush. If funding is secured by the Sept. 30 fundraising deadline, the clinic could break ground a year from now. Construction would be complete within 14-16 months of groundbreaking.
