RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The national Delta Chi fraternity chapter will pay more than $4 million in the aftermath of a high-profile wrongful death lawsuit that stems from a hazing incident in 2021. Then-first-year Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) student, friend and son Adam Oakes joined the Delta Chi fraternity on February 23, 2021. Just four days later, at an off-campus fraternity party, he died during a hazing incident. His death shook the country and made national headlines. It also prompted the creation of a televised documentary "Death of a Pledge," which detailed the tragedy amid Oakes' family's fight for justice. However, the concept of justice has changed shape since the legal matter first began. Adam Oakes, 19, of Loudoun County, died in an incident linked to a fraternity. (Photo from Oakes' family) Six members of the Delta Chi fraternity pleaded guilty, or no contest, to charges of hazing and serving alcohol to a minor, but prosecutors dropped charges against five remaining members. On the civil side of things, Oakes' family had initially sued the national fraternity chapter for $28 million. At the end of October, a Richmond judge approved a settlement. The fraternity and co-defendants will pay $2.5 million -- to be split between Oakes' parents -- and make $425,000 in donations to the "Love Like Adam" Foundation, which the family created to honor the victim. The defendants will also pay attorney fees. These payments all add up to more than $4.2 million in total. Oakes' family members have continued to be prominent voices against hazing on the local and national scales. They previously worked with Gov. Glenn Youngkin on legislation called "Adam's Law," creating change within college Greek life systems and protecting new members just like Adam. Parties involved have not yet responded to requests for comment.
