PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Lawyers representing an embattled scrap metal yard heard from frustrated neighbors for the first time since it was allowed to open back up after a massive fire there earlier this year. Rhode Island Recycled Metals hosted a public meeting at the West End Community Center Tuesday night, where neighbors voiced their concerns with the Allens Avenue scrapyard. This comes after R.I. Superior Court Judge Brian Stern allowed the scrapyard to reopen in August, so long as it implements a fire mitigation plan. The scrapyard's lawyers assured residents that infrared security cameras have been installed and there is now a 500-gallon water truck on site. R.I. Recycled Metals has also reduced the size of its scrap piles, among other precautionary measures. That system would put a cap on the scrapyard in an attempt to remedy any environmental concerns. "We're happy to report the results of our site investigation," said Richard Nicholson, one of the scrapyard's attorneys. "The site is truly not a risk to the community." But neighbors aren't convinced. "It doesn't sound sustainable," one resident argued. "It sounds like a stop gap to allow R.I. Recycled Metals to keep polluting the area." Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and the DEM Director Terry Gray have both repeatedly called for the scrapyard to be shut down the scrapyard indefinitely and placed it into receivership, which is the state-equivalent of federal bankruptcy.
