CHESAPEAKE Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Christmas tree vendors say they'll still have an affordable supply from North Carolina, even after Hurricane Helene's devastating impact in the western part of the Tar Heel state. North Carolina harvests about 3 million to 4 million Christmas trees, ranking second behind Oregon nationally. According to North Carolina Christmas Tree Association Executive Director Jennifer Greene, there are approximately 950 Christmas tree farmers currently in North Carolina. The bulk of those Christmas trees are grown in the western part of the Tar Heel state, an area that was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene in September. "The biggest concerns were infrastructure with roads for transporting trees," Greene tells 10 On Your Side. "Also farm access and getting into farms from washed out roads, bridges and culverts." Greene points out that the overall damage was not widespread, but around eight growers lost roughly 3,000 to 5,000 trees from flooding or mudslides, with one experiencing almost a total loss. One Christmas tree lot owner in Chesapeake said their longtime vendor from Avery County took a major hit during the storm. "Fifty-six inches of water was in his office," said Hunter Carter of Carter's Country Corner. "So he only has one time of year to do any business. And it made it a little harder on them working." Despite the devastation Helene had on some of the North Carolina farms, lot owners here in Virginia who's inventory is dependent upon that supply say they're still able to sell trees at average costs this year. "I would say they're $75 and up," says Christina Teeuwen of Teeuwen Greenhouses. "And if you want a really big tree, you're going to to pay a little bit more for it. So it just depends on what type of tree you want. Most people can't get a really big tree in their homes. So I think you're looking at $80." The Virginia Department of Forestry reports Virginia is the seventh-leading state for Christmas tree production, generating more than $11.5 million in revenue.
