TDOT looking for best holiday travel safety message
Dec 03, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation is looking for some creative types to come up with the best travel safety message for the holiday season.
This week, TDOT began accepting entries for its Make Travel Bright Safety Sign Contest. The winning message will be displayed on the Dynamic message boards along the interstates.
TDOT said your message can be about seatbelt usage, impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and aggressive driving and is asking people to keep it clean.

“This contest is a fun way to engage citizens and assist TDOT in accomplishing our goal of saving lives by getting the attention of drivers and reminding them to practice safe driving habits,” said Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley. “We encourage motorists to check the message boards daily for important travel information. This holiday season, we want everyone to reach their destination safely.”

There are 217 Dynamic Message Signs in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, and Memphis, and some rural areas across the state. The main purpose of the signs is to alert motorists of incidents, lane blockages, hazardous road conditions, or Amber Alerts.
In 2012, TDOT became the first DOT in the nation to display roadway fatality numbers on overhead signs. In addition to the fatality statistics, safety messages are displayed during off-peak travel times.

The signs can accommodate three lines of 21 characters (including spaces).

Earlier this year, The Federal Highway Administration updated its manual about traffic signs and discouraged electronic signs with obscure meanings, references to pop culture, or those intended to be funny. TDOT has not said how that will impact the judging.
The contest will run through December 11th. TDOT will then allow the public to vote on the best messages on TDOT's Facebook page beginning December 16th.
The winning message will be placed in rotation to run on the overhead Dynamic Message Signs statewide.
