Wounded Palestinian teen to receive treatment in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — As the war in Gaza continues, so does concern for those caught in the crossfire especially families and innocent civilians.
While organizations step in and try to help, one in particular, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund is bringing one teen here to central Kentucky to receive his treatment.
13-year-old Mustafa and his mother were evacuated from the danger along with eight other children who were injured during the war. Mustafa will be receiving treatment at Shriner’s Hospital.
The organization says Mustafa lost his leg in a bombing months ago during the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Mustafa is one of eight children coming to the United States to receive care after being wounded during the war.
Many were on hand to greet Mustafa on Monday night at the Bluegrass Airport, his host mother Suemia Elharezi says it’s bittersweet, as she still thinks about everyone left behind in worn-torn Gaza.
“I’m happy he’s here, but I’m also sad for all the other kids that didn’t have the opportunity to leave, and the fact that he left all his siblings behind to come here is. It’s hard. It’s hard, especially since it’s still going on. Nothing has changed, so I just hope that he’s comfortable and he gets the treatment that he needs. So that’s all we’re hoping for,” added Elharezi.
The fund led to Mustafa’s evacuation, which marked the first time it has brought someone to Lexington. Mustafa is one of eight children to be evacuated and brought to the United States for treatment by the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund Treatment Abroad Program in December alone.
