‘Light shaking’ reported following 4.0-magnitude earthquake off Volcano
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory officials said it happened 5 miles below sea level beneath the Kaiwi Channel.
Though it had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes, many felt the shaking, as more than 500 reports came in within the first hour.
"I felt it. My couch was shaking and I was really confused," said Blake Edwards, Kalama Valley resident. "All my friends didn't actually think it was an earthquake. One of my friends thought someone was on his roof and thought it was just the washing machine, so no one really knew what was going on."
Officials said reports mainly came from Oahu, with few from Molokai, Maui and Hawaii Island feeling the effects.
"Earthquakes in this region are not common but have occurred occasionally in the past 200 years. These earthquakes are caused by bending of the crust beneath the islands and associated adjustments related to the weight of the islands," HVO reported.
HVO said the earthquake intensity is unlikely to cause damage to buildings or infrastructure.
