WAIMEA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Officials from the Department of Water Supply on Hawaii Island issued an apology to Waimea customers who experienced an emergency water shutoff on Thanksgiving Eve. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The emergency shutoff affected the Lakeland Subdivision of Waimea. DWS reported the shutoff was issued due to "a high risk of a main break on Thanksgiving day." Big Island Mayor Kimo Alameda outlines priorities for island’s future DWS emphasized that timing flexibility was not possible for the incident. "Implementing a water shutoff right before a major holiday was not ideal timing. The Department decided that it would be prudent and less disruptive to do an emergency, proactive repair than risk an outage on Thanksgiving day," DWS said in a news release. The department announced the shutoff through news releases, social media posts and on its website but was unable to notify the customers who lost service while prepping their Thanksgiving meals. Officials said they regret their inability to inform all customers of the shutoff in advance and are working on finding better ways to inform them about emergency work in the future. They hope to accomplish this by deploying electronic message boards. "Whenever feasible, DWS schedules system repairs, fire hydrant flow tests, and other planned work that disrupts water service during periods when the fewest customers are affected," added DWS.
