FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Currently, it's quite the task trying to walk along Ardmore Avenue. The section between Lower Huntington and Covington roads doesn't have a path or even a sidewalk, but that may change. "What we typically do with these large capital projects, we include bicycle infrastructure, in the form of a trail in this case, and then a sidewalk on the opposite side," said Philip LaBrash, traffic engineer for the City of Fort Wayne. On Tuesday, Fort Wayne City Council voted 8-0 in favor of a do-pass recommendation for the project, setting up a final passage vote at a future meeting. Fort Wayne trail pioneers look back at city’s continued growth In addition to a new trail and sidewalk, the project would widen the 3-mile stretch of Ardmore Avenue to five total lanes between both sides of the road, including turn lanes. The $6,973,055 project would also add a curb and a gutter to the busy section that is quite diverse, connecting residential areas like the Elmhurst and Ardmore Knolls neighborhoods with industries like food packaging company Sabert and manufacturing center Web Industries. "Ardmore, Hillegas and Huguenard are all kind of one road that's a major industrial thoroughfare, but you also have the diverse nature of some neighborhoods there ... we are improving this because we foresee there to be a demand for traffic that is going to exceed the amount of traffic capacity that two lanes can provide," LaBrash said. The project is expected to cost nearly $7 million, and construction is set to last approximately 10 years if City Council approves.
