UNITY TWP., PA – A Pennsylvania grandmother who went missing while looking for her cat is believed to have fallen into a sinkhole. A search and rescue mission is currently underway in Unity Township for Elizabeth Pollard. She was last seen around 5 Monday afternoon. Police found her car just before 3 Tuesday morning with her 5-year-old granddaughter inside. Pollard was nowhere to be found. The sinkhole, which is 30 feet deep, is believed to be tied to an abandoned coal mine. Crews say they are confident that they are looking in the right place.
Pleasant Unity Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief John Bacha says, “The one camera we did find what appears to be a shoe, and it is, let’s just say it’s a modern shoe, not something you would find in a coal mine in Marguerite in 1940.”
Investigators believe the sinkhole opened while Pollard was walking around. They say there is no evidence that the hole was there before she started looking for her cat.
