Kevin Stefanski’s plan for helping Jameis Winston break his maddening habit of throwing pick-sixes can be summed up in three words: Coach ’em up. Stefanski was on Zoom in mid-afternoon Dec. 3 about 16 hours after Winston passed for 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-32 loss to the Broncos in Denver. Winston also threw three interceptions. The Broncos returned two of them for touchdowns. A pick and 71-yard return by Nik Bonitto gave Denver a 21-10 lead with 1:38 left in the first half. The Browns recovered from that error to eventually grab a 32-21 lead with 8:57 to play. They could not recover from Ja’Quan McMillian returning an interception 44 yards for a touchdown and a 41-32 Denver lead with 1:48 remaining. “Every game you go into wanting to be productive in the pass game while taking care of the football,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, Jameis understands that. It’s always something you coach. I don’t think you ever stop coaching players however many games they’ve played. “He’s a player I believe can get better. Part of that will be taking care of the ball, but I don’t want to lose sight of some really good moments from him last night.” The agony Winston felt about letting his teammates down was evident in his postgame news conference in Denver. “I know I’m better than this,” Winston said. “I’m praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes.” Winston is 2-3 in five starts since taking over after a ruptured Achilles tendon ended Deshaun Watson’s season. He has thrown 10 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in those five starts. He was picked three times in the 27-10 loss to the Chargers on Dec. 3, though none was returned for a touchdown. Feast or famine has been Winston’s M.O. since he was a rookie first overall pick by the Buccaneers in 2015. The Browns failed to score 20 points in any of the seven games Watson started before being injured. They scored more than 20 in three of Winston’s five starts. Watson never even reached 200 yards passing in a single game this season. Winston exceeded 200 yards in all five starts and 300 yards in three of them. He set a franchise record with 497 yards in the loss to Denver. “Not all interceptions are created equal,” Stefanski said. “He’s not going to be perfect. You’re going to miss throws. That’s part of playing this position. “So as a quarterback, learning from each one of these reps is so important, but I don’t want our quarterbacks to play a style where they’re so careful they’re ultra conservative, they’re not going to throw the ball down the field. That’s just not a recipe for moving the ball, either. So, he’ll continue to learn from each one of these and try to get better.” Winston’s next test comes Dec. 8 in Pittsburgh when the Browns and Steelers meet for the second time in a span of 17 days. He was 18 of 27 for 219 yards with no touchdown and one interception when the Browns upset the Steelers, 24-19, in a blizzard on Nov. 21 at Huntington Bank Field. He scored a rushing touchdown on a two-yard run. No JOK this week Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was placed on injured reserve after suffering a severe neck injury in the game with the Ravens on Oct. 27. A player on IR must miss four games before he can be activated. JOK has missed the required four games, but Stefanski has already ruled him out for the Pittsburgh game, so JOK will remain on injured reserve. “I don’t really have an update right now,” Stefanski said. “When I have one, I’ll make sure I get that to you guys. I’d rule him out for this game, but I’m not going to go much further past that.” Owusu-Koramoah was injured when his neck was compressed trying to tackle Ravens running back Derrick Henry. JOK was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to University Hospital. He was discharged the next day. “You hope and pray that he’s going to make a miraculous recovery,” linebacker Jordan Hicks said Nov. 16.
